You’ve just finished a great discussion with your guest, and you’re feeling confident that your listeners will love this episode, but when you listen back to the recording, the quality is terrible!

Follow these simple tips to get your sound right first time.

  • Avoid recording in mp3 format – wav is preferable.

  • Always record with headphones on – you need to hear what is being recorded, not the sound in the room around you.

  • Try to record in a room with as many soft furnishings as possible – your microphone does not discriminate which sounds it collects. The more hard surfaces there are, the more the sounds will bounce around and end up in the recording. If your office is particularly ‘bouncy’ sound-wise, consider recording in your bedroom if possible.

  • Buy a pop filter – aim for the best recording you can, rather than having to edit out erroneous sounds in post-production.

  • Understand your microphone - if you have bought a fancy new microphone, get to know how best to use it. Blue have some great information on setting up your Yeti Mic for example.

  • If recording a guest over Zoom, record in two channels if possible. You can find guidance on how to do so here. You should also send them this a guide to being a great podcast guest like this.
